Becca brings to Uprooted’s leadership team her professional expertise working with the Jewish community in the field of non-profit education. Becca’s experience as a Jewish communal professional is both national and pluralistic with organizations such as the Foundation for Jewish Camp, Gann Academy and currently with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston. Becca is now the Director of the Greater Boston Jewish Coalition for Literacy at JCRC. Prior to her work in the Jewish community, Becca developed a mentoring tutoring program for Goddard Riverside Community Center in New York City and managing professional development programs for the Department of Literacy in the Office of Curriculum and Professional Development at the New York City Department of Education.

Dalia Davis is one of the co-founders of Uprooted: A Jewish Response to Fertility Journeys, and serves as its Arts and Education Director. She is passionate about helping people struggling to grow their families find support within the Jewish community. Dalia is a Jewish Educator, dancer, and choreographer, who uses Jewish text as the inspiration for her choreographic works. Dalia holds a BA in Dance and Jewish History from Barnard College, a certificate in Talmud and Halacha from YU, and a MA in Jewish Education. Her Jewish educational background include serving as Rosh Beit Midrash for Merkavah Torah Institute, and teaching for the Florence Melton Mini School, Heritage Day School, and Camp Ramah. In addition to her work with Uprooted, she is also the founder of Beit Midrash in Motion, a fully-embodied approach to Jewish text study.

Dr. Julie Bindeman graduated from the George Washington University and is the co-owner of the practice Integrative Therapy of Greater Washington located in Rockville, Maryland. As a result of her own reproductive story, she pursued post-graduate training in the field of Reproductive Psychology, where she actively writes, lectures, and presents on the topic. She has been on several committees for the Mental Health Professional Group of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine including serving as Chair of the Continuing Education Committee and on the Social Media committee; she served as a Board Member of the Maryland Psychological Association for 8 years, and was the first Early Career Psychologist Committee Chair; and has been on other boards such as Uprooted and JCADA. Additionally, Dr. Bindeman is a member of a variety of organizations that are focused on Maternal Mental Health. She was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to serve on the Maternal Mental Health Task Force representing psychologists in the state. Sharona Whisler is the founder of Chizuk, a support group for Jewish women struggling with infertility in South Florida. She believes in the peer support model as a source for emotional strength. Sharona’s parents found comfort in Resolve support groups during their own struggles to get pregnant with her and her triplet siblings and were able to direct her to the same resource when she and her husband began facing their own fertility struggles . Sharona found comfort in connecting with other women who understood the emotional and physical pain associated with infertility during the 3 years until she got pregnant with her daughter through IVF, and continues to facilitate Chizuk meetings every month. She is honored to be a part of the Uprooted Team and looks forward to the positive impact Uprooted will have in the lives of so many who are suffering.

Nicole Goldstein is an attorney and journalist living in Washington, D.C. with her husband and two children. Nicole’s professional work has spanned areas as diverse as litigation over grenade fuses to military healthcare and sitting on the Board of a congressionally-chartered historical association. Despite this diversity, she firmly believes that every aspect of her personal and professional life is colored by her struggle to have children and and by her adoptions – both the heartbreaking failed adoption in which they had their baby for a week before losing him; and the two successful adoptions that created their miraculous family. She is a passionate advocate for motherhood, successfully convincing her top-tier law firm to institute maternity leave for adoptive parents, and counseling friends and complete strangers in the adoption process.

She is an active member of Ohev Shalom – The National Synagogue in Washington, D.C. She and her husband Franklin, also an attorney, have two perfect children who love their birthfamilies, but know that Hashem has found their forever families. She was a musical theatre major at the New World School of the Arts and studied in the jazz and vocal performance departments of the University of Miami, from which she graduated with double majors in Music and Judaic Studies. Before beginning her studies at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, School of Sacred Music in Jerusalem and New York, Cantor Schachner was the Cantorial Soloist at Temple Israel of Greater Miami, where her voice was heard weekly throughout south Florida on a live Shabbat radio broadcast. During her studies at Hebrew Union College, she served at Temple B’nai Israel of Woodbury, Connecticut for three years, until her graduation and ordination in May, 2001. Currently Cantor Schachner serves on the Board of Directors of Mayyim Hayyim Living Waters Community Mikveh and Paula Brody & Family Education Center. She also teaches as a Cantorial Coach in the School of Jewish Music of Hebrew College. Cantor Schachner loves reading, cooking, theatre, traveling and camping with her family. She and her husband, Cantor Jeffrey Stock, are the proud parents of Gavriel and Liat.

Professionally, Sandy serves as the Vice President, External Affairs and Communications at Selfhelp Community Services, a nonprofit organization in New York City dedicated to ensuring independence and dignity for older adults as they age, with specialized programs for Holocaust survivors. In her role, she is responsible for raising awareness about the services, mission, and vision of the organization through digital and print communication, advocacy, and outreach. Prior to her current role, Sandy worked at UJA-Federation of New York and for former Manhattan Borough President, and current NYC Comptroller, Scott Stringer. Sandy is also an alumni of Honeymoon Israel, and in 2019, serves as the chair of the Alumni Leadership Council.

His more formal positions include major gifts officer at United Way of Allegheny County and President & CEO of both Capital Camps & Retreat Center and of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County. As a Consultant he works with various types of camps ranging from girl scouts to YMCA, JCC, specialty programs and independent not-for-profits.

Profoundly impacted by her participation in the Brandeis Collegiate Institute in 1995, Laurie set out on a path to intentionally cultivate her own spiritual journey. Becoming a rabbi was an ideal way to merge her passion for Judaism and education after earning a BA in education and special education, as well as an MA in Leadership in Teaching, Curriculum and Supervision. During her time in rabbinical school, she participated in the Mandel Senior Educator program. Laurie was ordained by HUC, Los Angeles in 2003, and last year she completed the three year Rabbinic Leadership training provided by the Shalom Hartman Institute.
Laurie has worked for JCC Association as the Associate Director for the Mandel Center for Jewish Education, co-creating “Lechu Lachem,” designed to immerse camp directors in a personal exploration of their relationship with Judaism. She served as the Director of Education for Wilshire Boulevard Temple and Congregation Habonim, transforming both into an energized, vibrant place for learning and growth. In collaboration with the Manhattan JCC and three other Manhattan synagogues, Laurie helped create and implement the Jewish Journey Project, a choice-based supplemental Jewish educational program for kids through middle school.
She is active in Kids4Peace, Vice President of MATAN, UPROOTED board member, and a trained birth doula. Laurie is deeply committed to empowering women to reclaim mikveh through education and crafting individual experiences. She is also a teacher of mindfulness and believes strongly that a regular practice involving silence and chanting can transform, nourish and heal.

She released one full length album (2005) and one EP (2011), both comprised of original music. Blending her experience as a songwriter and passion for Jewish music, Shanna brings her passion for Jewish music and driving rock rhythms into invigorating, engaging synagogue services. At TBE Shanna loves directing their high school T’filah Band, singing with the Gan Elohim students and crafting intentional worship with her clergy partners.
She received her ordination from the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music (HUC-JIR) in May 2017.
Shanna encountered Uprooted after deciding to undergo an egg retrieval in her early 30s; she knew one day she wanted to be a mother, but had not yet met a partner for this journey. She is a strong advocate of this option that enables women who might not be ready to conceive to do so later in life.
Shanna lives with her fiancé Josh and their Golden Retriever Toby in Natick. She believes that one can find the sacred in all things secular, loves keeping her pulse on the underground music scene…and sushi.

During her tenure, the organization launched the successful “One Happy Camper program”, and received grants to open 9 Jewish specialty camps, along with running a number of other programs that helped overnight camps expand their reach to the community. She had previously been the Controller for Camp Kinder Ring/Circle Lodge and had begun working with overnight camps while serving as the Manager of Financial Operations, American Programs Division at Young Judaea.

Dr. Joshua Hurwitz is a staff physician and infertility specialist in Reproductive Endocrinology at Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT) who joined the practice in 2006 with a passion for patient care and teaching. In addition, he is Division Director of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) services in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences of Danbury Hospital. He is board certified in both Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
As Division Director of REI, Dr. Hurwitz is responsible for developing and implementing the division’s academic program, teaching residents, and giving lectures, as well as caring for infertility patients. Dr. Hurwitz has been teaching residents at Danbury Hospital in the operating rooms, clinic and RMACT’s private office many years, making his transition to director a natural progression. He continues to teach and implement the most advanced infertility therapies available, including endocrinological, surgical, genetic and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) techniques.
Dr. Hurwitz received his undergraduate degree in Biology & Society from Cornell University, and his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Dr. Hurwitz completed his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, also in Philadelphia. During residency training, Dr. Hurwitz was named Best Laparoscopic Surgeon, and has received many teaching awards.
After residency, he completed a three year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. During his fellowship, Dr. Hurwitz successfully launched several research programs related to reproductive aging and diminished ovarian reserve and has presented his research findings at many leading national and international fertility conferences. His research interests also include premature ovarian failure, oocyte cryopreservation, reproductive surgeries, embryo donation, and bioethics. He has published numerous abstracts, articles and book chapters on reproductive aging, reproductive hormones, IVF, ultrasound, and bioethics.
Dr. Hurwitz is a member of the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists, Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. He is also currently Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women’s Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
